That year, my life felt like a long, unending night. Sleeplessness, anxiety, unease, and a constant rush of conversations trapped me in a spiral.
Then one day in 2015, on the second floor of an old apartment, I began a yoga practice with a teacher from South Africa. She slowly pulled out a small piece of wood from her fabric pouch and lit it. The flame flickered for 5–6 seconds, and then a strange, unfamiliar scent began to swirl through the air. The room became still. It felt like the creases of my emotions were gently pressed flat.
That small piece of wood was Palo Santo from Peru.
Its Latin name, Bursera graveolens, means “holy wood.” Native to the dry tropical forests of Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, it has long been used in traditional spiritual rituals to clear energy, soothe emotions, and connect to the divine. Shamans and healers consider it a sacred tool for energetic cleansing.
True Palo Santo is rare and must never be harvested from living trees. Its distinctive scent and healing energy only emerge when the tree dies naturally, then lies untouched to dry and ferment for years. This process—lasting anywhere from 4 to 10 years—allows its resin to mature and release a deeply grounding aroma of coconut, sandalwood, and citrus smoke.
As I learned more about Palo Santo, a realization struck me:
Death makes way for rebirth.
From that moment on, I began to follow the soul behind the scent.
